ON THE 3RD OF MAY 2021, THE VERY FIRST TOURNAMENT WAS ORGANISED AS PART OF THE LGX ARENA AND NOT ON ANY GAME : SUPER SMASH BROS. ULTIMATE. YOUR FAVOURITE CASTERS ALEGRE (TWITTER: @DYLAN__FENDI) AND TRAX (TWITTER: @TRAX_TXK7) WERE HERE TO MAKE YOU FEEL THE HEAT DURING THE ENTIRETY OF THIS EVENT WHICH SAW PLAYERS FROM ALL AROUND EUROPE (INCLUDING FROM SCANDINAVIA!) FIGHT FOR VICTORY. IF YOU MISSED THIS EVENT, WORRY NOT ! WE’LL TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW IN THIS RECAP!

Tournament format

  • 128 spots ;
  • Seven-minute rounds or 3 lives (called stocks in the esport scenes and in this article) ;
  • BO3 (the first player who wins 2 rounds) until winners bracket quarterfinals/ losers bracket eighth finals then BO5 (the first player who wins 3 rounds) until the end of the tournament ;
  • Double-elimination format : a winners bracket and a losers bracket. The teams losing in the winners bracket are placed in the losers bracket and have a last shot at winning the tournament. A loss in the losers bracket means that the teams are out of the tournament.

It’s raining Shutouts !

This tournament was marked by an impressive number of one-sided matches : no less than 89 faceoffs ended up 2-0 or even 3-0 ! But let us say this to the players who suffered those harsh defeats : don’t give up ! A defeat, even unpleasant, is part of the game and we will always encourage players from all levels to participate in our tournaments. THIS is the LGX Arena Spirit !

But we also witnessed some upsets. As a matter of fact, 26 matches saw the underdogs winning and advancing further in the competition. Also, Zephir_CDOS’s comeback against SuperStriker in losers bracket quarterfinals is the proof that nothing’s lost in a Smash Ultimate game.

A fratricidal fight

Team HIVE sent two really strong players : DarkThunder and Zephir_CDOS. Both players but especially DarkThunder managed to pull off amazing loser runs and the inevitable happened: the two friends had to face each other in the losers bracket semifinal.

After a breathtaking match, DarkThunder’s Bowser took the best of Zephir_CDOS’ Shulk and advanced in the losers bracket final. The young German player managed to defeat the Bayonetta of his fellow countryman Samuuu and qualified for the grand final where Otakuni from Helios Gaming was waiting impatiently.

The best Grand Final one can ever dream of

We had our finalists: Otakuni from France with his Link vs DarkThunder from Germany with his Bowser. Otakuni, who was playing another tournament at the exact same moment, had a less stressful path and won all of his previous matches. This means that he only had to win one BO5 to win the entire competition whereas DarkThunder, coming from the losers bracket, had to win two BO5.

Noone can deny that this final didn’t keep its promise. The two players fought hard, outplayed one another consistently but DarkThunder won the first BO5 3-2 and inflicted Otakuni his very first defeat of the tournament. But as said before Team HIVE’s player needed to win two BO5 to win it all. And that would be an understatement to say that the second BO5 was as good as the first one.

We are now in the last round in the BO5, 2-2 in the scoreboard, 7 minutes on the clock, and hands are sweaty (mine not theirs). The round begins and … the admins are disconnected from the game and no one will ever see what happened next. After an insufferable suspense, we finally have a name: Otakuni wins the LGX Arena and €250 ! But DarkThunder is not left out as he earns €100. Congratulations to our finalists and to all the players who participated!
